NEWSLETTER - February 2008 Review of our last Concert We are still hoping to find a reviewer for our last concert. If you have a friend who would enjoy putting pen to paper for this or for future concerts then please let Frances know. Dates for your diary Our next concert 8th March, All Saints, West Dulwich (entrance Lovelace Road). The afternoon rehearsal is 2.30 - 5.30pm. The concert will start at 7.45pm. Frances has the list of necessary jobs that will make the day run smoothly for us all and this time they will be carried out by the Seconds, Violas & Basses. Dress - black for ladies; dinner jackets for gentlemen. Future rehearsal and concert dates This season's remaining concert date is 21st June. Rehearsals for this will start on 15th April. The first concert of the next season is on 29th November 2008. Make sure you put these dates in your diary. Our website In case you haven't noticed we have a policy of not sending out too many emails. Some people would find them annoying or even troublesome at work. So it's always a good idea to keep an eye on our website - particularly the members' pages - as it is always up to date and you may find that many of the questions you have can be answered by consulting it. However, rest assured that if anything urgent crops up then we will email all members. Also don't forget our Amazon link which will bring in revenue for the orchestra. Members' News Chris Burns has left the country to live in Dubai. Quite a loss for the firsts, but we're very pleased that Martin Stokes is back with us and has recovered from breaking his collar bone in three places! We are also very glad that Ann Earle, from the seconds, is in complete remission from her cancer. She is slowly regaining her strength so won't be back this term. Ann has two violins to sell so if anyone is interested or would like to visit her, then please call her (Frances has the number). Louise has decided to leave the committee so there is a vacancy. If anyone would like to know more then do talk to one of the committee members. Conductors Julian had to miss two sessions recently. This meant we had two evenings with Sinead Hayes conducting, which everyone enjoyed even though she worked us very hard! Julian has asked Sinead to conduct "Finlandia" in the concert as a thank-you for studying the scores and being ready to step in when needed. She says she enjoys conducting us very much and we're always so friendly. Marketing The marketing group would like to hear from anyone with contacts with local school teachers (not necessarily music teachers). We are developing a scheme which would involve giving interested pupils tickets for our concerts. Any information to Jeremy, Russell, Tim or Frances. Boot Sale The idea of holding a boot sale in the summer has been put forward - not only as a fund raiser, but also to raise our local profile. If anyone can offer a little storage space then we can get started. Any offers or enquires to Jane in the seconds please. Charity Since June 2004 we have raised a total of £1135.79 for St Christopher's Hospice. Frances was invited to visit St Christopher's before Christmas and she was more than impressed by the level of care and support, not only to patients on site, but also to the day patients, people being supported in their own homes and the bereavement counselling. Belinda Kearns, St Christopher's fund raiser, showed Frances an onsite venue that would be very suitable for small ensembles to give concerts in, and also explained that performances to patients in their wards would be welcomed at any time. If anyone is interested in playing to patients or playing in a fund-raising concert for St Christopher's then please talk with Frances. Tickets Extra tickets are available from Russell, or Nicky if Russell is away. Please remember that increased ticket sales are an essential part of securing our future. |
